Obesity is increasingly emerging as a major public health challenge in Pakistan, with health experts calling for a shift in how the condition is understood and treated. Experts say obesity should be recognised as a chronic disease rather than simply a result of lifestyle choices or lack of willpower.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one billion people worldwide are living with obesity. In 2022, around 43% of adults globally were overweight, while 16% were living with obesity, representing more than double the rate recorded in 1990.

Health experts said Pakistan is experiencing one of the fastest increases in obesity rates. WHO data for 2022 showed that 23% of Pakistani adults were living with obesity, reflecting a 16.4% increase over the previous decade. Estimates further suggest that nearly 60% of adults in Pakistan are overweight, while about 25% are obese.

Experts warned that obesity is not only associated with excess weight but can also increase the risk of serious health conditions. The WHO classifies obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable diseases.

Dr Tanveer Abbas, a bariatric and metabolic surgeon, stressed that obesity should no longer be viewed as a failure of willpower. He said appropriate medical and surgical support can help patients achieve better long-term health outcomes rather than focusing only on weight loss.

Against this backdrop, Chisel Health organised an obesity awareness week that brought together patients, healthcare professionals and community members. Discussions focused on increasing awareness, educating people about obesity and highlighting modern treatment options.

Experts emphasised the need for greater public awareness and improved access to appropriate treatment as Pakistan continues to face rising obesity rates. They also called for moving beyond the idea that obesity is solely a matter of personal lifestyle and recognising it as a significant health condition requiring proper medical attention.
