Apple hit with £2 billion UK lawsuit over App Store dominance

Apple is facing a massive legal challenge in London, where the tech giant stands accused of overcharging millions of UK customers through its App Store. The claim, filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal, seeks roughly £2 billion ($2.7 billion) in damages.

The lawsuit centers on Apple’s “unfair” commission structure. Developers selling digital goods or services are forced to use Apple’s own payment system, which takes a cut of up to 30%. Critics argue this isn’t just a transaction fee—it’s a tax that stifles competition and drives up prices for the average iPhone user.

Dr. Rachael Kent, a lecturer at King’s College London and the class representative for the suit, argues that Apple’s walled garden is built on exploitation.

“Apple locks users into its ecosystem, then dictates the terms of every purchase,” Kent said. “It’s a position of absolute power that leaves developers and consumers with no real choice.”

The legal team representing the claimants suggests that roughly 19.6 million UK users could be eligible for compensation. If the court certifies the claim, affected individuals could see payouts for purchases made on the App Store dating back to 2015.

This isn’t an isolated headache for Tim Cook’s team. Similar antitrust scrutiny is mounting globally. From the European Union’s Digital Markets Act to ongoing litigation in the United States, regulators are increasingly targeting the “Apple Tax.” The company has long defended its policies as essential for maintaining the security and privacy of its platform, insisting that the App Store provides a safe, curated marketplace that benefits everyone.

Apple’s legal counsel is expected to argue that the suit is meritless, pointing to the billions of dollars they’ve helped developers earn since the store’s inception.

For the tech giant, the financial hit is significant, but the real risk is the precedent. If the UK tribunal rules that these fees constitute an abuse of a dominant market position, Apple may be forced to dismantle the very business model that has fueled its services revenue for over a decade.

The case is now in the hands of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. A ruling in favor of the claimants would not just trigger a massive payout—it would signal the end of the App Store’s current era of unchecked control.
