Trichologist Anabel Kingsley has advised people not to ignore early signs of hair thinning, stressing that addressing the problem sooner can improve the chances of managing hair loss effectively.
Kingsley, president of the Philip Kingsley brand, said hair loss can have several causes, including stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, postpartum changes and ageing. She emphasized that there is no instant cure and that effective hair care requires a consistent, holistic approach involving nutrition, scalp health and appropriate treatment.
She particularly highlighted hair thinning during perimenopause and menopause, saying women should not simply accept significant thinning as something they must live with. According to Kingsley, treatment should begin when thinning becomes noticeable rather than waiting for the condition to progress.
For some types of hair loss, minoxidil may be beneficial, although Kingsley stressed that it is not suitable for every cause of hair loss and that the underlying problem should first be properly assessed.
She also warned against relying on unregulated hair supplements and so-called miracle products. Instead, she recommends a balanced diet containing sufficient protein, iron and vitamin B12, noting that hair growth is highly sensitive to changes in overall health and nutrition.
Kingsley further advised people to avoid excessive heat styling and hairstyles that pull tightly on the hair, as these practices can contribute to breakage and hair loss. Dermatologists similarly recommend gentle hair care and early professional assessment when thinning or shedding becomes noticeable.
The expert’s overall message is clear: early attention matters. Identifying the cause of hair thinning and starting appropriate treatment early may help preserve existing hair and improve long-term outcomes.
