West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara has called for “proper, independent” medical care for Imran Khan, the former Pakistan prime minister currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail.

Lara’s appeal marks a rare instance of a high-profile international athlete weighing in on the legal and personal plight of the former cricketer-turned-politician. His intervention comes amid mounting concern from Khan’s legal team and supporters, who have repeatedly alleged that the 72-year-old is being denied access to adequate healthcare and basic amenities behind bars.

The call from the batting icon arrives as the legal battles surrounding Khan show few signs of slowing. His supporters maintain that his incarceration is politically motivated, a claim the current government denies. The debate has recently shifted from the courtroom to the cell, with Khan’s family and lawyers insisting his health is deteriorating due to prolonged isolation and lack of proper medical attention.

Lara, who has long maintained a personal rapport with Khan, framed his request as a humanitarian necessity. He emphasized that regardless of political standing, every individual is entitled to basic human rights, including access to medical professionals who operate independently of the state.

The Pakistan government has consistently maintained that Khan is receiving the same medical facilities as any other prisoner. Officials have dismissed allegations of negligence as “propaganda,” insisting that doctors are regularly available to monitor his health. However, these assurances have done little to quiet the international outcry from human rights organizations and Khan’s global network of allies.

The former prime minister has been at the center of a volatile political storm since his ouster in April 2022. Facing a barrage of charges ranging from corruption to inciting violence, his time in custody has been defined by restricted access to the outside world. His legal team continues to file petitions, arguing that the jail environment is unsuitable for a man of his age and medical history.

For now, the standoff remains unresolved. Lara’s intervention adds a new layer of international pressure on the Pakistani authorities, shifting the focus from the legal merits of the charges to the personal well-being of the man who once led the country to a World Cup victory.

Whether this appeal moves the needle in Islamabad remains to be seen, but it has certainly forced the conversation of prisoner welfare into the global sporting spotlight.
