The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has officially rolled out a new, technologically advanced National Identity Card (NIC) designed to curb identity theft and streamline digital verification across Pakistan.

The new card moves away from traditional printing methods, incorporating laser-engraving technology and a multi-layered polycarbonate structure. These changes make the document significantly harder to forge. While the physical design has evolved, the core purpose remains the same: providing citizens with a secure, globally recognized proof of identity.

NADRA officials confirmed the update is part of a broader push to integrate biometric and digital authentication into daily banking and government services. The card features a chip capable of storing encrypted data, allowing for faster, more reliable verification at border crossings and financial institutions.

“We aren’t just changing the look of the card; we are hardening the entire ecosystem,” a senior NADRA official said. “Every security feature embedded here is a direct response to the sophisticated fraud attempts we’ve monitored over the last two years.”

For current cardholders, the transition won’t be immediate. Existing NICs remain valid until their printed expiration date. NADRA has clarified that there is no mandatory requirement for all citizens to rush to registration centers simultaneously. The rollout will follow a phased approach, prioritizing new applicants and those whose cards are due for renewal.

Critics have pointed to the potential for long wait times at registration centers, a recurring issue for the authority. To mitigate this, NADRA has expanded its mobile registration units and launched an upgraded online portal, allowing citizens to update their profiles and request the new card from home.

The cost structure remains tiered, with standard, urgent, and executive processing fees unchanged for the time being. As the country pushes toward a fully digitized economy, this card serves as the foundational tool for citizens to access everything from tax filings to social safety net programs.

Whether this hardware upgrade actually reduces the backlog of pending applications remains the primary concern for the public. For now, the new cards are being issued at all major NADRA centers nationwide, marking the first major design shift for the authority in nearly a decade.
