A 35-year-old woman was beaten to death in Gujarat’s Kheda district on Tuesday, as a crowd of onlookers stood by, recording the assault on their phones instead of intervening.

Police identified the victim as a local resident who had been targeted following a heated dispute over a land boundary. The attack, which took place in broad daylight, lasted several minutes. Video footage circulating on social media shows the victim collapsing under the blows of wooden sticks and metal rods while men stood nearby, capturing the violence on their mobile devices.

The incident has triggered a wave of outrage across the state, putting the spotlight on the growing trend of “bystander apathy.”

“We have arrested four individuals identified in the video,” said the district superintendent of police. “Teams are currently tracking the remaining suspects involved in the assault.”

Local authorities confirmed that the victim had reached out to the police station regarding the land dispute just hours before the attack. A preliminary investigation suggests the complaint was logged, but no preventive action was taken by the officers on duty. Two constables have since been suspended for negligence.

The footage, which has been viewed thousands of times, shows the attackers fleeing the scene on motorcycles after the victim stopped moving. Not a single person in the frame attempted to shield her or call for an ambulance while the assault was underway.

Social activists in Ahmedabad point to a disturbing shift in public behavior. “People are treating real-life tragedies like content for social media,” said a local human rights advocate. “When the instinct to record outweighs the instinct to save a human life, we aren’t just looking at a crime—we are looking at a moral collapse.”

The victim leaves behind three children. As the investigation continues, the focus has shifted toward the role of the bystanders, though legal experts say current laws in India offer little recourse for those who choose to film violence rather than act.

For now, the village remains under heavy police deployment, with authorities bracing for potential protests as the community demands harsher penalties for both the perpetrators and those who watched the killing unfold.
