World Physiotherapy Day is being observed today, September 8, to raise awareness about the vital role of physiotherapy in maintaining mobility, preventing health complications and supporting recovery from illness and injury.

According to World Physiotherapy, the theme for World PT Day 2026 focuses on the role of physiotherapy and physical activity in the prevention, management and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Physiotherapy is not limited to treating muscle and joint problems. Physiotherapists can help people improve strength, balance, mobility and physical activity levels, while tailored exercise and rehabilitation programmes can support patients recovering after cardiovascular events and strokes.

The 2026 campaign also highlights the importance of physical activity in reducing cardiovascular disease risk and helping people maintain independence. Physiotherapists can assess patients, develop personalised exercise programmes and support rehabilitation according to individual needs.

World Physiotherapy Day has been observed every year on September 8 since the date was designated in 1996. The day provides an opportunity to recognise physiotherapists and promote greater public understanding of the profession’s contribution to health and rehabilitation.

Health experts and physiotherapy organisations are using the occasion to encourage people to remain physically active and seek appropriate rehabilitation when recovering from injuries, stroke, heart-related conditions or other health problems.
