For many people, the day does not truly begin until they have had their first cup of coffee. Caffeine can increase alertness and temporarily reduce feelings of tiredness, which is why it has become one of the world’s most popular morning beverages.

However, the way you drink coffee—and how much you consume—can influence how you feel throughout the day. For some people, caffeine may be followed by a period of increased alertness and then an uncomfortable energy dip.

How does caffeine work?

Caffeine affects the brain by blocking adenosine, a chemical that builds up during the day and contributes to feelings of sleepiness.

By reducing the effect of adenosine, caffeine can make you feel more awake and focused. This effect is temporary, however.

As caffeine wears off, the underlying tiredness may become more noticeable, especially if you did not get enough sleep.

Why might you feel an energy crash?

An energy dip after coffee can have several causes. Drinking a large amount of caffeine may produce a strong temporary boost followed by a noticeable decline in alertness.

Your overall diet, hydration, sleep quality and stress levels can also affect energy.

Coffee itself is not necessarily the problem. The issue may be using caffeine to compensate for chronic sleep deprivation or consuming large amounts throughout the day.

Sugar can make the situation worse

Some coffee drinks contain significant amounts of added sugar and refined carbohydrates. These can increase calorie intake and may contribute to fluctuations in energy.

Plain coffee or coffee with a small amount of milk can be a different nutritional choice from heavily sweetened specialty drinks.

How to enjoy coffee more wisely

Pay attention to how your body responds to caffeine. If you notice anxiety, shakiness, rapid heartbeat or sleep problems, consider reducing your intake.

Avoiding caffeine too late in the day may also help protect nighttime sleep. Even when you fall asleep easily, caffeine consumed later can interfere with sleep quality in some people.

The bottom line

Coffee can be part of a healthy routine, but it should not replace adequate sleep, balanced meals and good hydration.

If your morning coffee is repeatedly followed by an energy crash, look at your overall sleep, diet and caffeine habits rather than simply reaching for another cup.
