AI’s Biggest Challenge Is Electricity But Who Will Pay the Bill?

Artificial intelligence is growing rapidly, but its biggest challenge may not be technology or computer chips. It is electricity.

AI data centres require enormous amounts of power to operate advanced servers, train AI models and process millions of requests.

According to the International Energy Agency, global data-centre electricity consumption could nearly double from 485 terawatt-hours in 2025 to around 950 terawatt-hours by 2030.

This growing demand is forcing countries to invest in new power plants, transmission lines and electricity infrastructure.

But an important question remains: who will pay for these upgrades?

Energy experts warn that if technology companies do not cover the additional costs, ordinary households and small businesses could face higher electricity bills.

The debate is now shifting towards making major AI companies pay a fair share of the electricity infrastructure they depend on.
