Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held an unannounced meeting with PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif in Lahore on Sunday, signaling a push to stabilize the government’s position amid mounting economic volatility and political friction.

The meeting, held at the elder Sharif’s Jati Umra residence, moved past the usual photo-ops. Insiders suggest the discussion centered on the government’s strategy for handling the upcoming fiscal budget and the persistent pressure from opposition factions. With inflation figures remaining stubborn and the IMF’s latest review looming, the brothers are looking to align their party’s messaging before the next round of tough policy decisions.

The timing is telling. The federal government is currently navigating a narrow path between meeting international debt obligations and preventing further public unrest over rising utility costs. Nawaz Sharif, despite currently holding no official government office, remains the primary architect of the party’s major policy shifts. His role in this meeting suggests he is taking a more direct hand in steering the administration’s economic direction.

“They discussed the roadmap for the next six months,” a party source familiar with the meeting said, though they declined to provide specifics on whether a cabinet reshuffle or a change in economic strategy was on the table.

Beyond the economy, the leadership also reviewed the current political temperature in Punjab. The PML-N has been struggling to reclaim its narrative in the province, where the PTI’s grassroots support continues to challenge their traditional stronghold. The party is now weighing its options on how to manage the provincial administration more effectively, with some senior members pushing for a more aggressive public outreach campaign.

For now, the message from the meeting is one of consolidation. The leadership is aiming to project a unified front, attempting to silence internal murmurs regarding the government’s slow pace in delivering promised relief packages.

Whether this coordination results in tangible policy changes remains the primary question for a public weary of political maneuvering. For the Sharif brothers, the objective is clear: keep the coalition intact and the economy afloat before the next political storm hits.
