Today marks the death anniversary of Pakistan’s iconic broadcaster, scholar, and philanthropist Tariq Aziz, who passed away on this day in 2020. Best known as the host of Pakistan Television’s legendary show “Neelam Ghar,” later renamed “Tariq Aziz Show,” he was a towering figure in the world of media and a passionate advocate for Urdu language and culture.

Tariq Aziz became a household name across Pakistan, not only for his charismatic hosting style but also for his famous catchphrase:
“Dekhti aankhon, suntay kanoon ko Tariq Aziz ka salaam!”
This opening line, which became an iconic part of Pakistan’s television history, has a deeply emotional story behind it. During one episode of Neelam Ghar, Aziz revealed that he changed his introductory line after receiving a heartfelt letter from a visually impaired fan who wrote, “You never greet people like me, who cannot see but only listen.”
This letter moved him profoundly, leading him to adopt the now-historic greeting that included both viewers and listeners, reflecting his inclusive spirit.

Born in 1936 in Jalandhar, British India, and later migrating to Pakistan, Tariq Aziz began his career in Radio Pakistan before becoming one of the first faces to appear on Pakistan Television (PTV) when it launched in 1964. Over the decades, he established himself as a master of oratory, a promoter of literary values, and a guide for generations on etiquette, general knowledge, and patriotism.

Aside from his contribution to television, Tariq Aziz was also a respected poet, intellectual, and former Member of the National Assembly. He authored several books and was widely admired for his deep knowledge and command of the Urdu language.

In an extraordinary act of patriotism and philanthropy, he willed all his property and assets to the state of Pakistan, dedicating them to the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He announced this decision publicly during his lifetime, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his country.

Today, on his death anniversary, tributes pour in from all corners of the nation. Fans, colleagues, and media personalities remember him not just as a television host, but as a cultural institution.

Tariq Aziz may no longer be with us, but his voice, vision, and values continue to echo across Pakistan.
Rest in peace, Tariq Aziz Sahib. Your salaam will forever live in our hearts.
