In a major crackdown against street crime and illegal businesses, police in Karachi’s Kemari district raided an infamous gutka/maawa production facility located in the areas of Sher Shah Cable Market, Pech Mandi, and Jehanabad, within the jurisdiction of Pak Colony Police Station.
During the raid, the main accused, Umar Farooq, managed to escape. He is a repeat offender who has previously been on the run in multiple cases related to gutka and maawa production. However, police succeeded in arresting two of his accomplices, identified as Muhammad Aqib (son of Muhammad Asif) and Anwar (son of Yaqoob).
The raid led to the seizure of a large quantity of prepared gutka/maawa as well as raw materials and packing items used in its production.
The recovered items include large drums and tubs, soaked betel nut, slaked lime, packets of different brands of tobacco leaf (patti), and packaging wrappers.
This operation was carried out under the directives of SSP Kemari and led by SHO Pak Colony, Sub-Inspector Anwar Ali, along with the street crime unit, based on a tip-off from a confidential informant.
According to police, arrested suspect Muhammad Aqib already has a criminal record under FIR No. 180/24, registered under Section 4/8 for gutka/maawa at Pak Colony Police Station.
A fresh case has been registered against the arrested individuals and further investigation is underway.
