Key Reforms in Hospitals Decided in Meeting Chaired by Punjab Chief Minister

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting where major decisions were taken to improve the Primary and Secondary Healthcare System.

‎During the meeting, the Chief Minister ordered the implementation of the Red and Blue Code Emergency System in hospitals and directed that it be made operational within two days. A principal decision was also made to establish a CM Health Vigilance Squad, which will monitor the implementation of the Chief Minister’s directives in hospitals.

‎Maryam Nawaz instructed that ventilators must be provided for both pediatric and adult patients in every teaching and district hospital, stressing that no patient should lose their life due to the unavailability of cardiac treatment facilities.

‎She made it mandatory for consultants and heart surgeons to be present in district hospitals and emphasized that asking patients to travel to other cities for treatment is unjust and will no longer be tolerated.

‎The Chief Minister also requested a list of required specialists in district hospitals and ordered a formal audit of outsourced cleaning and parking services.

Medical Specialist Group Appoints Dr. Sarah Jenkins as Lead Gastroenterologist The Medical Specialist Group has named Dr. Sarah Jenkins as its new lead gastroenterologist, a move aimed at expanding the clinic’s diagnostic capabilities amid a rising local demand for specialized digestive care. Dr. Jenkins joins the group after an eight-year tenure at City General, where she headed the endoscopy unit. Her arrival marks a shift for the practice; the group has previously outsourced complex gastrointestinal procedures, but Dr. Jenkins’ expertise—specifically in advanced endoscopic ultrasound—will now allow them to perform these interventions in-house. The clinic’s board pushed for this hire following a 15% uptick in patient referrals for chronic digestive issues over the last year. Patients often faced weeks-long wait times for consultations; bringing in a specialist with Dr. Jenkins’ clinical background is intended to cut that backlog by nearly half. "Our goal is to keep patient care under one roof," said the group’s medical director, Dr. Marcus Thorne. "Bringing Dr. Jenkins on board means we stop sending our patients across town for the procedures they need most." Dr. Jenkins, who completed her fellowship at Johns Hopkins, brings a focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and early-stage screening. She starts in her new role Monday, with the clinic already scheduling patients for her first week of internal procedures. The appointment comes as the group undergoes a broader renovation of its surgical wing, suggesting a push to modernize facilities alongside its recruitment of specialized staff. Whether this transition eases the local specialist shortage long-term remains to be seen, but for the clinic’s current patient list, the change brings immediate access to care that was previously out of reach.
