50 Judges, Officials Attend DNA Training at SFDL-ICCBS Karachi

KARACHI – Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL) at International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, organized a day-long training on forensics, Wednesday, to provide 50 judges and judicial officials with the basic outline of forensic disciplines. The visit came to an end of a training project a weeklong organized by Sindh Judicial Academy.

The participants comprising of judges, prosecutors, medico-legal officers and investigators of all parts of Sindh were made aware of the practice of forensic sciences and how important DNA analysis was within the criminal justice system.

Distinguished Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Ex. Director ICCBS, greeted the audiences through video recording, who emphasised the significance of scientific evidence in addressing contemporary crime. He emphasized that SFDL, which is supported by the Sindh government and was established in 2019, has recorded more than 8,970 cases and has helped to increase the level of conviction in DNA-related crimes, which stood at 4% and rose to 15%.

The visit was brought together by Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, Project Director of SFDL, who emphasized that the institution is the only ISO-17025 certified forensic science laboratory in Pakistan and this improves its international reputation. He further said that the lab is making a significant contribution towards capacity building since it tends to train legal and investigative professionals on a regular basis.

The justice representatives visited the plant, sat in the lab and had a technical question-answer session. Visit was finished by giving certificates and good comments of the people who gave good comments about the high standards and advanced capabilities of the lab.
