CUPERTINO — Apple is reportedly preparing a massive design overhaul for its upcoming iPad mini, slated for release by October 2026, which will introduce the first-ever officially water-resistant tablet to the company’s lineup. According to details shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and industry patents, the California-based tech giant plans to achieve this milestone by implementing a radical, vibration-based “mechanically actuated panel acoustic system.” This innovative approach vibrates flat surfaces on the tablet’s chassis to emit sound, effectively transforming parts of the device’s body into a speaker diaphragm and eliminating traditional speaker grilles—one of the main ingress routes for moisture and dust. This differs significantly from the adhesive and gasket method used to seal the IP68-rated iPhone models.
The water-resistant chassis is just one of four major upgrades expected for the compact tablet later this year. South Korean supply chain outlet ETNews reported in June that Samsung Display has already commenced mass production of new 8.4-inch OLED panels for the device. The transition to OLED technology will bring true blacks, higher contrast ratios, and significantly improved power efficiency compared to the LCD screen found on the iPad mini 7, though recent leaks suggest it will feature a standard 60Hz LTPS design without ProMotion capabilities. This upcoming launch will mark the first refresh to the iPad mini lineup since October 2024, when Apple updated the device with the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence support.
