Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has confirmed that Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will serve as Pakistan’s next foreign secretary. The appointment marks a transition in the country’s top diplomatic post, with Iftikhar set to replace the outgoing Syrus Sajjad Qazi.

Iftikhar, a seasoned career diplomat, currently serves as the Additional Foreign Secretary (UN and Economic Coordination). His background is extensive, including a recent stint as Pakistan’s Ambassador to France and a previous role as the Foreign Office spokesperson. He also served as the country’s Ambassador to Thailand.

The incoming secretary inherits a complex diplomatic landscape. Pakistan’s foreign policy is currently defined by a delicate balancing act: managing strained ties with neighboring Afghanistan, navigating a debt-heavy relationship with the IMF, and maintaining the “all-weather” strategic partnership with China.

His time as spokesperson gave him a public-facing role during some of the most volatile periods in recent diplomatic history. Colleagues in the Foreign Service describe him as a “technocrat” who prefers quiet, methodical negotiation over high-profile grandstanding. That approach will likely be tested as he takes the helm at the Agha Shahi Block.

The outgoing secretary, Syrus Sajjad Qazi, reached the age of superannuation. His tenure was defined by the challenges of post-election diplomatic recalibration and the ongoing regional security crisis.

Iftikhar’s promotion follows a standard bureaucratic vetting process, though it lands at a time when the Foreign Office is under pressure to deliver tangible economic gains through “economic diplomacy.” Whether the shift in leadership signals a change in strategy or a continuation of the status quo remains the central question for the diplomatic corps.

He is expected to assume the role formally in the coming days, once the administrative transition is finalized.
