Bangladesh is facing its worst measles outbreak in decades, with nearly 1,000 suspected and confirmed measles-related deaths reported since the outbreak began in March 2026. More than 166,000 suspected cases have been recorded, including nearly 20,000 laboratory-confirmed infections. Children have been particularly affected by the outbreak.

The crisis has placed severe pressure on Bangladesh’s healthcare system, with hospitals reporting overcrowding and large numbers of children suffering serious complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and encephalitis. Many families have struggled to find hospital beds and appropriate treatment for their children.

Health experts have linked the outbreak to gaps in routine vaccination. Measles vaccination coverage declined after disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and later political and administrative problems. The proportion of children receiving the recommended second measles vaccine dose fell from about 93% in 2024 to 86% in 2025.

In response, Bangladesh launched an emergency vaccination campaign with support from the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Gavi. Nearly 20 million children have reportedly been vaccinated, but experts say stronger routine immunization and continued catch-up campaigns are still needed to close immunity gaps.

The outbreak has become a devastating reminder of the consequences of missed vaccinations, with families across the country mourning children lost to a disease that can largely be prevented through vaccination.
