High blood pressure, or hypertension, remains a major global health concern. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.4 billion adults aged 30–79 were living with hypertension in 2024, while many people remain unaware that they have the condition because it often causes no noticeable symptoms.

Health experts emphasize that regular blood pressure checks are one of the most important ways to detect hypertension early. Knowing your blood pressure numbers can help identify a problem before it contributes to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke and kidney damage.

Lifestyle choices can also play an important role in protecting against high blood pressure. WHO recommends eating more fruits and vegetables, reducing salt intake, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding tobacco. Adults are encouraged to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days.

Limiting alcohol and managing stress are also important. People who already have hypertension should follow their healthcare professional’s advice and take prescribed medicines consistently rather than stopping or sharing medication.

The message from health authorities is clear: regular monitoring, healthier daily habits and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risks associated with high blood pressure.
