A panic attack can feel overwhelming. A racing heart, rapid breathing, dizziness, chest discomfort and an intense feeling that something terrible is happening can make you wonder whether you might actually lose consciousness. But can a panic attack really make you faint?

Can a Panic Attack Cause Fainting?

Usually, no. People experiencing panic attacks commonly feel faint, dizzy or light-headed, but actually passing out is uncommon. Panic attacks often involve rapid breathing, or hyperventilation, which lowers carbon dioxide levels in the blood and can cause dizziness, weakness, tingling and a feeling that you are about to faint.

In rare situations, severe hyperventilation can contribute to fainting. Anxiety can also trigger a vasovagal response, in which blood pressure and heart rate suddenly drop and cause a person to lose consciousness.

Why Do You Feel Like You Are Going to Faint?

During a panic attack, the body’s fight-or-flight response becomes highly activated. Breathing may become fast and deep, while the heart beats faster. Hyperventilation can cause blood vessels supplying the brain to narrow temporarily, producing dizziness and light-headedness.

This can create a frightening cycle:

Panic → rapid breathing → dizziness → fear of fainting → more panic

Although the sensation can be intense, feeling faint does not necessarily mean that you will actually pass out.

Common Symptoms of a Panic Attack

A panic attack may cause:

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Sweating
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Chest discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Feeling detached from yourself
  • Fear of losing control or dying

Panic attacks commonly peak within minutes and can be extremely frightening even when they are not medically dangerous.

What Should You Do If You Feel Faint?

If you feel as though you may pass out during intense anxiety, sit or lie down somewhere safe so you do not fall. Try to slow your breathing rather than taking repeated rapid, deep breaths. Breathing slowly and gently can help reduce hyperventilation and the symptoms associated with it.

If possible, remind yourself that the sensation is temporary and focus your attention on your breathing and surroundings.

When Should You Get Medical Help?

It is important not to automatically assume that every episode of fainting is caused by anxiety. Actual loss of consciousness can have many causes, including heart problems, blood-pressure changes and other medical conditions.

If you actually faint—especially if it is your first episode—you should be medically evaluated. Emergency care is particularly important when fainting occurs with chest pain, an irregular or pounding heartbeat, difficulty speaking or moving, seizure-like movements, serious injury, or failure to recover normally.

The Bottom Line

A panic attack can make you feel as though you are about to faint, mainly because anxiety and hyperventilation can cause significant dizziness and light-headedness. Actually passing out from a panic attack is uncommon, although severe hyperventilation or a vasovagal response can occasionally contribute to fainting.

Understanding the difference can make panic symptoms less frightening—but unexplained or repeated fainting should always be checked by a healthcare professional.
