NEW DELHI: At least eight people lost their lives in a powerful explosion near the historic Red Fort (Lal Qila) in India’s capital on Monday, triggering a massive fire that engulfed several vehicles and sent panic through the crowded old city.

According to Delhi Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi, the blast occurred in a car close to the Lal Qila Metro Station, but the exact cause remains under investigation. Officials said they are examining whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate.

Local media footage showed thick plumes of smoke and flames rising from the congested street, with multiple vehicles on fire as residents screamed and ran for safety. The blaze reportedly spread to at least six cars and three autorickshaws before being brought under control by firefighting teams, said Deputy Fire Chief of Delhi.“We heard a huge sound; our windows shook,” a resident told NDTV, describing the moment of the explosion.

Authorities quickly cordoned off the area, urging onlookers to move away while rescue workers searched for survivors.

The Red Fort, a 17th century Mughal-era monument and one of India’s most famous landmarks, attracts thousands of tourists daily. The site and surrounding old quarters are among the busiest parts of Delhi, raising concerns about urban safety and emergency preparedness.

Officials have yet to confirm whether the explosion was an accident or an act of sabotage, but investigations are ongoing.
