ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Wednesday announced a 16-day extension for filing income tax returns for the 2025 tax year.
According to a notification issued by the FBR, income tax particulars can now be filed until October 31. The previous deadline was set to expire on October 15.
This decision marks the second extension granted by the tax authority, following requests from various trade bodies, taxpayers, and tax bar associations.
FBR’s Revenue Performance
The extension comes as the FBR faces scrutiny over a significant revenue shortfall. Despite introducing Rs1.3 trillion in new taxes and an original revenue target of Rs12.97 trillion for the current fiscal year, the tax body experienced a shortfall of Rs1.2 trillion.
The FBR ultimately collected Rs11.74 trillion after two downward revisions. This underperformance drew attention from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during recent technical-level talks, where Islamabad was asked to explain the gap, The News reported. FBR officials attributed the shortfall largely to unrealised recoveries worth Rs250 billion tied up in pending court cases.
