ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing to launch its first Hyperspectral Satellite (HS-1) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC) in China on October 19, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced.

The HS-1 mission is hailed as a major leap in Pakistan’s space program, set to begin a new era of advanced, space-based applications across several critical sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, and environmental monitoring.

Key Applications of HS-1:

  • Agriculture: The satellite’s hyperspectral imaging will enable precision farming through high-resolution data. By offering detailed insights into crop health, soil moisture, and irrigation patterns, HS-1 is anticipated to boost yield estimation by 15–20 percent, significantly supporting national food security efforts.
  • Urban Development: HS-1’s state-of-the-art sensors will monitor environmental changes, map infrastructure, and analyze urban growth trends. Its capability to capture the spectral signatures of man-made structures will aid sustainable city planning, efficient resource management, and informed land-use policies.
  • Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management: The satellite is expected to play a pivotal role in early warning and rapid response systems. Its advanced imaging will assist in flood prediction, landslide detection, and geo-hazard assessments, particularly along the Karakoram Highway and northern regions. The data will also enhance post-disaster evaluations, transportation network analysis, and water resource modeling, providing timely insights into floods, earthquakes, deforestation, and land degradation.

The launch of HS-1 will integrate with Pakistan’s expanding remote sensing fleet, which includes PRSS-1 (launched in July 2018), EO-1 (January 2025), and KS-1 (July 2025). This expansion aims to significantly strengthen the nation’s space-based infrastructure and data capabilities.

The mission is a key component of the National Space Policy and SUPARCO’s Vision 2047, which aims to position Pakistan among the leading countries in space technology and innovation to drive sustainable national development
