ISLAMABAD — The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a criminal case against social media activist Noreen Niazi under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), marking another escalation in the state’s crackdown on online dissent.

The case, filed late Wednesday, centers on allegations of spreading “hate speech” and “inciting public disorder” through digital platforms. Investigators claim Niazi’s recent social media activity crossed legal boundaries, though the specific posts cited in the First Information Report (FIR) remain under scrutiny by legal experts.

For Niazi, this isn’t just a legal hurdle; it’s a direct challenge to her ongoing advocacy work. Her supporters argue the move is designed to muzzle criticism of current policies, pointing to a pattern where federal agencies use PECA’s vaguely defined clauses to silence outspoken voices.

The FIA’s Cyber Crime Wing has reportedly seized digital evidence, including logs of her recent interactions and video uploads. While the agency has kept details of the investigation tight, officials confirmed that a summons has been issued for her to appear before the inquiry committee at the FIA headquarters in Islamabad.

Legal experts familiar with the case suggest the charge of inciting public disorder carries significant weight. Under the current interpretation of PECA, a conviction could lead to a multi-year prison sentence and heavy financial penalties.

“The timing is impossible to ignore,” said a defense lawyer tracking the case. “When you look at the track record of these filings, they rarely move this fast unless there is a clear directive to prioritize the arrest.”

Niazi, who has gained a significant following for her critical commentary, has yet to issue a formal response. Her legal team is currently preparing a petition for pre-arrest bail in the Islamabad High Court, aiming to block any immediate attempt by authorities to take her into custody.

As the legal proceedings begin, the case serves as a stark reminder of the narrowing space for digital expression in Pakistan. Whether this becomes a high-profile test of free speech protections or another routine detention remains the central question for observers in the capital.
