Islamabad: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb addressed the National Assembly during the budget debate for fiscal year 2026-27, defending the government’s financial proposals and describing the budget as a balanced plan aimed at sustaining economic growth while ensuring fiscal discipline.

During his speech, the minister highlighted key measures introduced in the budget, including efforts to broaden the tax base, increase revenue collection, support exports, and attract investment. He told lawmakers that the government remains committed to economic reforms designed to strengthen macroeconomic stability and reduce reliance on external borrowing.

Aurangzeb emphasized that recent improvements in economic indicators, including lower inflation trends and stronger foreign exchange reserves, have created a foundation for sustainable growth. He argued that the FY27 budget seeks to maintain this momentum by encouraging business activity, supporting key sectors of the economy, and expanding social protection programs for vulnerable groups.

Responding to criticism from opposition members, the finance minister said the government had attempted to strike a balance between revenue generation and public relief. He noted that difficult economic decisions were necessary to ensure long-term stability and meet development goals.

The minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to reforms in taxation, energy, and state-owned enterprises, stating that these measures are essential for improving competitiveness and restoring investor confidence. The budget debate is expected to continue as lawmakers review various proposals before the finance bill is finalized.
