The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has committed to completing the remaining traffic lanes on Karachi’s University Road by the end of September. The project, which has faced repeated delays and public scrutiny, is now moving into its final phase of asphalt laying and lane marking.

For thousands of commuters, this represents a potential end to the gridlock that has defined one of the city’s busiest arteries for months. The construction has constricted traffic flow near the Expo Centre and NIPA, forcing motorists to navigate narrow, uneven patches that have triggered daily bottlenecks during peak hours.

FWO engineers confirmed the timeline this week, citing the need to finalize drainage systems before pouring the final layer of bitumen. If the September target holds, the road will finally regain its full capacity, easing the pressure on alternative routes that have been overwhelmed by displaced traffic.

Local traders and residents remain skeptical, however. Many point to previous missed deadlines and the lingering debris that still lines the shoulders of the road.

“We’ve heard these dates before,” said a shopkeeper near the NIPA intersection. “The machines arrive, they work for two days, and then the site sits empty for a week. We just want the dust to settle so business can return to normal.”

The project’s completion is critical not just for traffic, but for the safety of pedestrians. Exposed manholes and uneven surfaces have caused multiple minor accidents throughout the construction period.

With the monsoon season often bringing unpredictable rain to the city, the FWO faces a race against time. Any further delays beyond September could complicate the paving process, potentially pushing the project into the final quarter of the year. For now, the focus remains on meeting the month-end deadline — a threshold that will determine whether the city’s infrastructure authority regains any semblance of public trust.
