A smart gel has been developed at the research level that could help in the treatment of joint pain (arthritis).
According to reports, researchers at the University of Cambridge have created a polymer material that can detect slight changes in pH levels occurring during inflammation or flare ups in the joints.
This is because when a joint becomes inflamed, it turns slightly acidic.
The gel primarily uses hyaluronic acid, which possesses cartilage like properties. It releases the medicine precisely at the time and location where it is needed at the site of pain.
In this way, it can be effective for long term treatment while minimizing side effects, as the medicine does not spread throughout the body but acts only where required.
