The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sounded an urgent alarm for northern regions, warning of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) as temperatures climb. Officials placed Chitral, Upper Kohistan, and Swat on high alert, citing the increased risk of sudden glacial melts threatening downstream communities.

The threat follows a sustained rise in regional temperatures, which accelerates the melting of glacial ice. When these lakes breach their natural dams, they release massive volumes of water and debris into river systems with little warning. For residents in high-altitude valleys, this leaves almost no time for evacuation.

District administrations in the affected areas have been directed to activate emergency response centers immediately. The PDMA has ordered local authorities to clear potential bottlenecks in drainage paths and ensure that early warning systems—often a mix of sirens and community-based alerts—are fully operational.

“We are monitoring the glacial lakes around the clock,” said a PDMA spokesperson. “The current weather patterns create a volatile environment, and we’ve instructed local teams to stay in the field until the heatwave subsides.”

These northern districts are particularly vulnerable due to their unique geography. Narrow valleys often act as funnels for flash floods, turning minor breaches into catastrophic surges that wipe out bridges, roads, and agricultural land. In previous years, similar events have severed communication lines, leaving isolated villages cut off from aid for days.

The PDMA has also advised tourists and local travelers to avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks and glacial streams during peak afternoon hours. While local disaster management cells remain on standby, the agency’s focus remains on preventative evacuation for those living in the immediate path of high-risk glacial drainage channels.

Residents have been urged to stay tuned to local radio and official social media updates, as weather-induced flooding can shift rapidly. With the monsoon season looming and temperatures showing no signs of dropping, the coming weeks remain a critical window for disaster mitigation in the north.
