LAHORE: Google’s decision to establish its first office in Pakistan and expand initiatives in artificial intelligence, digital skills, education and local technology manufacturing could provide new opportunities for the country to strengthen its digital economy and prepare its young population for the global technology market.
The company’s latest commitments include free one-year access to Google Gemini for students, expanded digital skills programmes and support for local technology development. These initiatives could help Pakistan build on its existing pool of IT professionals and freelancers.
However, experts say the key challenge will be turning these initiatives into long-term careers, businesses and technological capabilities.
Ahmed Aziz, Executive Director of UAE-based technology company Aaronvio, said the development could help expand Pakistan’s technology talent pool by giving students and developers greater exposure to artificial intelligence.
He said AI training and increased access to technology would help improve the skills of local talent and create new opportunities for students and developers.
Pakistan already has a large community of IT professionals and freelancers working with international clients. Wider access to AI tools, combined with structured training, could provide this workforce with additional skills and improve their ability to compete internationally.
The benefits could extend beyond education. Students with AI skills could use the technology for research, software development, problem-solving and entrepreneurship, while businesses could gain access to workers better equipped to adopt emerging technologies.
Former SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Iftikhar Ali Malik also welcomed Google’s offer of free Gemini access, saying it would allow Pakistani students to explore AI and develop skills suited to the changing global technology landscape.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, industry and technology companies to expand access to AI and other emerging technologies.
According to Malik, greater familiarity with AI tools could improve research, productivity, creativity and problem-solving while preparing young people for employment opportunities in the global digital economy.
The connection between education and industry could become increasingly important as artificial intelligence changes the nature of jobs. Experts say teaching students how to use AI is only one part of the process, while connecting those skills with employers, startups and international markets will determine the broader economic impact.
Aziz said Google’s involvement was significant because it went beyond training and certification programmes. He also highlighted local Chromebook assembly as a development that could contribute to Pakistan’s wider technology ecosystem.
He said training, certifications and local assembly could collectively support the development of the country’s technology infrastructure and environment.
A combination of skilled workers and supporting infrastructure could allow Pakistan to develop digital products, launch technology businesses and compete more effectively in international markets. Local manufacturing, technology training and improved connectivity could all contribute to this ecosystem.
Another potential area of development is cloud infrastructure. As companies and public institutions increasingly adopt AI, demand for secure computing capacity and data infrastructure is likely to increase.
Greater local cloud capacity could also help address concerns relating to data privacy and data residency.
Aziz, however, cautioned that Google’s decision to establish an office in Islamabad should not be interpreted as a commitment to build a major cloud region or hyperscale data centre in Pakistan.
Such investments would require separate commercial and infrastructure decisions, he said, while adding that cloud and enterprise-level data centre development could become a longer-term opportunity for Pakistan.
