Islamabad:

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across the country’s northern regions between September 15 and 19, urging residents, travelers, and tourists to take precautionary measures.

According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea combined with westerly winds are likely to trigger downpours in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, and the tribal districts of Waziristan, Kurram, and Orakzai.

In Punjab and Islamabad, rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, and Sargodha between September 16 and 19. Meanwhile, Azad Kashmir (Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Kotli, and Mirpur) and Gilgit-Baltistan (Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Ghizer, and Diamer) are also likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

The PMD warned that on September 16 and 18, certain areas could witness torrential downpours, raising the risk of flash floods in local streams, rivers, and nullahs, particularly in hilly regions of KP, Murree, Galiyat, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

Authorities also cautioned that strong winds, hailstorms, and lightning may cause damage to weak structures, electricity poles, billboards, and solar panels. Landslides in mountainous areas such as Mansehra, Abbottabad, Swat, Shangla, and Azad Kashmir are also possible.

“People, tourists, and commuters are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from vulnerable or risky locations during the forecast period,” the PMD said in its advisory. Relevant government departments have been directed to remain on high alert and take preventive measures to minimize potential losses.

Meanwhile, most parts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to remain dry, though coastal areas may see partly cloudy conditions.
