Caracas residents awoke to flooded streets and gridlocked traffic Wednesday after an overnight deluge overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. The downpour, which began late Tuesday, turned major arteries into riverbeds and left cars stranded in low-lying sectors of the capital.

The impact hit hardest in the Petare and El Valle districts, where overflowing storm drains sent muddy water into ground-floor businesses and residential basements. Municipal cleanup crews are currently clearing debris from clogged sewer grates, but the sheer volume of rainfall has hampered progress.

For many in Caracas, the flooding is a recurring nightmare exacerbated by decades of neglected infrastructure. The city’s aging drainage network, designed for a smaller population, often fails to handle sudden tropical storms. Residents in affected areas spent the morning manually bailing out homes, with many pointing to the lack of preventive maintenance ahead of the rainy season.

“It’s the same story every time the sky opens up,” said Maria Elena, a shop owner in El Valle whose storefront was inundated by dawn. “We clear the drains ourselves because if we wait for the city, the water reaches our waist.”

While the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMEH) warned of continued precipitation throughout the week, local authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive emergency plan for vulnerable neighborhoods. Emergency response teams have been deployed to monitor high-risk zones near the Guaire River, which remains at near-capacity.

The persistent rainfall also triggered minor landslides on the outskirts of the city, causing temporary closures on the Autopista Regional del Centro. While no casualties have been reported, the economic toll on small business owners and the disruption to public transit underscore the fragility of the capital’s urban core.

As the clouds remain heavy over the valley, the city’s ability to withstand further rainfall depends on whether municipal teams can clear the primary bottlenecks before the next wave arrives. For now, Caracas remains in a state of cleanup, with thousands bracing for more of the same.
