ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is preparing to introduce courses focused on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in Pakistan’s higher education sector, as universities increasingly expand their academic offerings to cover emerging digital technologies.

The move is aimed at equipping students with knowledge and practical skills in areas that are becoming increasingly important across the technology and financial sectors. HEC’s revised curricula already include Blockchain & Cryptocurrencies as a FinTech course, while its Computer Science curriculum also contains specialised areas related to blockchain and Web3 security.

The proposed academic focus comes as blockchain technology continues to gain applications beyond digital currencies. Blockchain can be used for secure record-keeping, digital verification, smart contracts, decentralised applications and financial technology.

HEC has also been incorporating blockchain into its own digital initiatives. The commission has been developing a blockchain-based degree attestation system designed to improve the security and transparency of academic document verification. The system is intended to support a more digital and paperless attestation process.

The growing academic interest is also reflected in programmes being offered by Pakistani universities. In June, the Sindh Higher Education Commission launched a blockchain skills development initiative covering areas such as blockchain fundamentals, cryptocurrency, smart contracts, decentralised applications and blockchain security.

Meanwhile, universities and training institutions have increasingly started offering specialised courses in blockchain, cryptocurrency and FinTech, providing students with opportunities to develop skills in emerging areas of the digital economy.

The introduction of such courses could help Pakistani students understand both the technical and financial dimensions of blockchain and cryptocurrency. It may also support the development of professionals capable of working in areas such as FinTech, cybersecurity, software development, digital finance and blockchain-based applications.

However, experts and educators are likely to face the challenge of ensuring that these courses keep pace with rapidly changing technology while also addressing issues such as cybersecurity, regulation, financial risks and responsible use.

The planned expansion of blockchain and cryptocurrency education reflects HEC’s broader effort to modernise university curricula and prepare graduates for emerging technologies and changing demands in the global digital economy.
