A deeply disturbing child murder case in Lahore’s Ichhra neighbourhood has taken an even darker turn, with police saying the children’s mother has allegedly admitted to killing them and linked the crime to severe domestic tensions and a collapsing marriage. According to investigators, the woman told police she believed her husband was unwilling to separate from her because of the children, and that this became a central factor in what authorities are now describing as a planned act.
The victims were identified by police as five-year-old Mominah Batool, four-year-old Momin Raza and 18-month-old Umm-e-Habiba. Their bodies were found inside the family home in Ichhra with fatal throat injuries, a discovery that shocked the city and quickly drew a heavy police and forensic response. Rescue officials and investigators moved in after an emergency call, while the bodies were shifted for post-mortem examination.
In the first hours after the killings, suspicion did not fall on one person alone. Police had detained the mother, the father and an uncle while trying to piece together what happened inside the house. But as officers reviewed CCTV footage, cross-checked movements and compared statements, they said contradictions began to emerge. By Thursday and Friday, senior Lahore police officials were publicly saying the investigation had turned sharply toward the mother’s alleged involvement.
Police officials say the alleged motive grew out of ongoing domestic conflict. One strand of the investigation points to divorce-related tensions. Another suggests repeated arguments inside the home, including a serious dispute the night before the children were killed. Some reports quoting investigators say there had also been friction with in-laws and that the atmosphere in the house had been strained for some time. Those claims remain part of the ongoing investigation and have not been tested in court.
There are other grim details too. Investigators say the knife believed to have been used in the killings was purchased shortly before the incident, a point they say suggests planning rather than a sudden outburst. Police also say blood evidence was recovered from both a room and a bathroom in the house, and forensic work is still under way to establish the full sequence of events. Senior officers have said early speculation circulating online — including claims that the children were found holding knives — was false.
On Friday, a judicial magistrate in Model Town granted the accused woman, identified in reports as Rida, five days’ physical remand after police sought more time for investigation. The investigating officer told the court that police still needed to complete various steps, including a polygraphic test, as they continue building the case.
For Lahore, the case has become more than a crime story. It has opened up painful questions about domestic abuse, mental distress, family breakdown and whether warning signs inside homes are too often ignored until it is far too late. The legal process will now decide criminal responsibility. But for now, three children are dead, a family is shattered, and a city is left trying to understand how such a thing happened behind a closed door.
