New Delhi — A delegation representing the “cockroach” protesters sat down with government officials Tuesday, but the meeting ended without a breakthrough. The group, which adopted the derogatory nickname used by local authorities to describe them, remains entrenched in their demand for a formal inquiry into urban displacement policies.

The protesters, mostly residents of informal settlements in the capital, have spent weeks camping outside key government buildings. Their movement gained national attention after a viral video captured a senior municipal official dismissing their housing grievances by referring to the residents as “cockroaches that need to be cleared.”

Instead of retreating, the community embraced the insult. They began wearing cockroach-themed masks and carrying placards featuring the insect to protest the dehumanizing rhetoric used by the state.

“We didn’t choose this label, but we’re owning it now,” said Rina Devi, a community leader who attended the three-hour session at the Ministry of Housing. “If the government sees us as pests, they need to realize that pests are everywhere. We aren’t going anywhere until our relocation plans are transparent.”

Government officials maintained a rigid stance throughout the talks. While the Ministry acknowledged the need for “orderly urban development,” it refused to pause the ongoing demolition drives that have left hundreds homeless this month. A spokesperson for the Ministry declined to comment on the specific “cockroach” remark, characterizing the protest as an “orchestrated effort to stall essential infrastructure projects.”

The stalemate leaves thousands of families in legal limbo. With the monsoon season approaching, the fear of losing their makeshift shelters to both bulldozers and the elements has intensified the desperation on the ground.

Legal experts monitoring the situation point out that the government is currently in violation of several high court directives regarding the mandatory provision of alternative housing. Despite this, the authorities continue to prioritize land clearance over rehabilitation, citing urgent city expansion mandates.

As the protesters regrouped outside the ministry gates late Tuesday, the atmosphere remained tense. There are no further meetings scheduled. For now, the “cockroach” protesters say they will keep their vigil, signaling that the friction between the city’s urban expansion and its most vulnerable residents is far from resolved.
