KARACHI: Torrential rains on Tuesday triggered severe urban flooding in Karachi as the Malir and Lyari streams swelled beyond their banks, inundating dozens of neighborhoods and disrupting daily life across the city.

According to rescue officials, low-lying areas of Korangi, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Malir were among the worst affected, where floodwaters entered homes, shops, and markets, forcing residents to seek shelter elsewhere. Dozens of vehicles were stranded, while traffic jams paralyzed key arteries including Sharae Faisal, University Road, and MA Jinnah Road.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that water levels in both streams rose sharply following hours of relentless downpour. Rescue teams, assisted by volunteers, were deployed to evacuate families from inundated localities and provide emergency assistance.

Meanwhile, K-Electric confirmed widespread power outages as several feeders tripped due to heavy rainfall, plunging multiple districts into darkness. Citizens also complained of delayed drainage and waterlogging, criticizing municipal bodies for failing to clear stormwater drains in time.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the city recorded its highest rainfall of the season within a few hours, warning of more showers in the coming days. Authorities have been placed on high alert amid concerns of further flooding if rains persist.

Residents have urged the Sindh government and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to ensure swift drainage clearance and effective relief operations, stressing that inadequate urban planning and poor infrastructure continue to magnify the city’s flood crisis during every monsoon.
