A routine evening in Karachi’s Orangi Town turned tragic Tuesday when a 16-year-old boy lost his life attempting to save a four-year-old child from an open storm drain.

The teenager, identified as Mohammad Zain, was walking near the overflowing gutter when he saw the toddler slip into the rising water. Witnesses say Zain didn’t hesitate. He dove into the debris-filled drain, managing to push the younger boy toward the concrete edge where bystanders pulled the child to safety.

Zain, however, was swept away by the swift, monsoon-fueled current.

Rescue teams arrived within the hour, but the drainage network’s complexity made the search difficult. Divers recovered his body nearly two kilometers downstream late Tuesday night.

Local residents are now demanding accountability from the municipal authorities. The drain had been left uncovered for months, a persistent safety hazard that community leaders say they flagged with the district administration repeatedly.

“We told them it was a death trap,” said a neighbor who witnessed the rescue. “Zain paid the price for their negligence with his life.”

The four-year-old remains in stable condition at a local clinic, treated for minor injuries and shock.

For the people of Orangi Town, the tragedy is a stark reminder of the city’s crumbling infrastructure. While officials often promise upgrades following seasonal rains, the uncovered drains remain, waiting for the next victim.

Zain’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday morning. He leaves behind a grieving family and a neighborhood forced to reckon with another preventable death.
