KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has increased water and sewerage charges by an average of 7.05%, with the revised rates effective from July 1, 2026.
According to a notification issued by KWSC, the increase is based on the average Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Under the revised tariff, water and sewerage charges for residential properties will be determined according to plot size, while fixed monthly charges have been introduced for commercial centres and shops.
Sources said the Water Board Act allows KWSC to increase tariffs by around 7% annually. The corporation has also been facing a low recovery rate and billions of rupees in outstanding dues. KWSC says the revised tariff is intended to strengthen its revenue base and improve its financial position.
The increase comes as residents in several parts of Karachi continue to face water supply and quality problems. Recent development work near NIPA Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal reportedly damaged water and sewerage lines, resulting in foul-smelling and contaminated water reaching residential areas.
Residents said the polluted water was unfit for drinking and other domestic use. Local mosques have also reportedly faced difficulties due to the shortage of clean water for ablution.
Residents have expressed concern over the possible health impact, particularly on children, and urged authorities to take immediate action.
Although water supplies were reportedly restored after several days, residents said the water remained dirty and foul-smelling. They also complained that excavation work had damaged roads, creating difficulties for commuters and increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
Affected residents have called on the authorities to repair the water and sewerage infrastructure and ensure a reliable supply of clean water.
