KARACHI —

Karachi cites finally got a break from the scorching heat as the city witnessed its first spell of monsoon rain for 2025 late Thursday night. The showers, accompanied by rolling thunder and flashes of lightning, continued into the early hours of Friday, offering much-needed respite from the sweltering weather.

Several parts of the metropolis, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Clifton, and Saddar, reported moderate to heavy rainfall. The drop in temperature that followed brought a pleasant change, with many residents stepping out to enjoy the cool breeze and wet streets.

But like clockwork, the rain also highlighted the city’s persistent drainage woes. Waterlogging was reported in multiple low-lying areas, causing traffic bottlenecks and minor disruptions for early morning commuters.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the rainfall marks Karachi’s first official monsoon spell of the season. “Monsoon currents have entered the city, and more rain is expected over the coming days,” a PMD spokesperson confirmed.

Here’s a breakdown of the recorded rainfall across Karachi on June 26:

North Karachi – 20.5 mm

Maymar – 17.8 mm

Model Colony – 13 mm

Gulshan-e-Roomi – 12 mm

DHA Phase 2 Extension – 11 mm

Saadi Town – 11 mm

Clifton – 10 mm

Gulistan-e-Johar – 9 mm

FB Area Block 16 – 6 mm

Scheme 33 – 5 mm

Bahria Town – 5 mm

FB Area Block 14 – 4 mm

Lyari – 2.5 mm

Authorities have advised residents to stay updated through official weather advisories and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to urban flooding. Meanwhile, the city administration faces renewed calls to ensure drainage systems are functioning to avoid further public inconvenience.
