Defense Minister Khawaja Asif conducted a surprise inspection of the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore on Tuesday, signaling growing government frustration with the state of infrastructure at the country’s primary aviation hubs.

The minister walked through the passenger lounges, immigration counters, and baggage claim areas, pointing to malfunctioning air conditioning units and broken seating as evidence of long-term neglect. He spent nearly an hour questioning airport management on why basic amenities have remained in disrepair despite repeated complaints from international travelers.

“This is the face of the country for anyone landing in Lahore,” Asif told airport officials. “Excuses about budget constraints don’t hold up when the basics—cleanliness and functional cooling—are missing.”

He directed the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to finalize a refurbishment plan within 48 hours. The minister’s visit follows a string of public social media posts from passengers highlighting the airport’s dilapidated state, including leaking ceilings during the recent monsoon rains and long, unorganized queues at immigration.

While the CAA has struggled with funding gaps and administrative bottlenecks, the government is under pressure to improve public-facing infrastructure ahead of potential increases in international flight operations. Staff members present during the visit noted that the minister specifically requested a report on the procurement process for airport maintenance contracts, hinting that current vendor performance is under review.

For the thousands of passengers passing through daily, the inspection offers a glimmer of accountability. Whether it translates into lasting change or remains a fleeting photo opportunity depends on whether the 48-hour deadline results in actual construction crews on the floor by the weekend.
