The growing popularity of weight-loss medications is changing consumer demand in the beauty industry, with cosmetics giant L’Oréal exploring skincare products designed to address skin changes associated with rapid weight loss.
L’Oréal Chief Executive Nicolas Hieronimus said the increasing use of GLP-1 medications has begun to influence beauty purchases, particularly in the skincare market. These medicines, which include Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, were developed for conditions such as diabetes, while some are also used for weight management under medical supervision.
Rapid weight loss can sometimes lead to loose skin, reduced facial fullness and a more noticeable appearance of wrinkles. These changes are not necessarily a direct effect of the medicines themselves; they can occur as the body loses fat quickly, including fat that contributes to facial volume.
To respond to this growing consumer concern, L’Oréal is exploring products through its skincare brands, including SkinCeuticals and Kiehl’s. The company is also studying how its products perform among people using GLP-1 medications, as beauty businesses seek to understand the needs of this expanding consumer group.
L’Oréal has strengthened its involvement in the dermatology and aesthetic treatment sector through its investment in Galderma, a company known for injectable aesthetic products and treatments designed to support collagen production and restore facial volume. Other beauty companies are also investigating products for people experiencing changes in their appearance after significant weight loss.
Despite these developments, dermatology experts caution that skincare creams have limitations. While certain products may improve skin texture, hydration and overall appearance, they cannot fully replace facial fat or restore lost volume. The extent of skin changes also depends on factors such as age, genetics, nutrition and the speed of weight loss.
The shift highlights how the growing use of weight-management medications is influencing industries beyond healthcare. As more consumers seek solutions for skin changes following weight loss, beauty companies are investing in research and developing products to meet these emerging needs.
