LAHORE: Reports that male doctors conducted autopsies of female bodies at Lahore General Hospital have prompted the hospital administration to open a formal inquiry after a video showing the procedure circulated widely on social media. The alleged incident, which sources say occurred without a female doctor or lady medical officer present, raised immediate concerns because medico-legal guidelines require female post-mortems to be conducted in the presence of female medical staff.
Hospital principal Professor Farooq Afzal of Ameeruddin Medical College and Lahore General Hospital took notice and constituted a five-member high-level inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committee is headed by Professor Khizar Hayat Gondal and includes Professor Hanif Mian, Dr. Faiza Athar, Dr. Kareemullah, and Dr. Yahya Sultan. Professor Afzal said the committee will carry out a comprehensive probe and that strict disciplinary action will be taken against any staff found responsible, in accordance with the law.
The administration emphasized transparency by noting that no doctor from the Forensic Department was included in the committee membership. The inquiry will review the video evidence, interview relevant staff, and examine compliance with established medico-legal and ethical protocols governing post-mortem examinations of female decedents.
Hospital officials reiterated that any staff or officials found to have breached professional or legal standards will face disciplinary measures. The probe aims to determine whether standard operating procedures were violated and to recommend corrective measures to uphold ethical, legal, and professional norms in medico-legal practice.
