Meta platforms falter: Facebook and Instagram hit by global outage

Facebook and Instagram users across the globe are struggling to access their accounts this morning, with thousands of reports flooding outage tracking sites. The disruption began shortly after 10:00 a.m. GMT, leaving millions unable to refresh feeds, post content, or log into the platforms.

Downdetector, which monitors real-time service status, shows a sharp spike in reports originating from North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Users attempting to access the platforms are met with “session expired” errors or blank screens, effectively locking them out of their digital lives.

Meta has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the root cause. This silence is typical for the tech giant in the immediate aftermath of a crash, but it provides little comfort to the small business owners and creators who rely on the apps for their daily operations.

The timing is particularly problematic for Meta. The company has been pushing to integrate its backend infrastructure across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to streamline advertising and data processing. While this improves efficiency, it also creates a “single point of failure” scenario where a glitch in one system can ripple across the entire ecosystem.

Previous outages of this magnitude have been tied to Domain Name System (DNS) misconfigurations or internal server-side updates gone wrong. While Meta engineers work to restore connectivity, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the world’s dependence on a single company’s server stability.

As of now, the platforms remain largely unresponsive. Whether this is a minor server hiccup or a deeper structural failure, the outage is already hitting Meta’s bottom line as ad impressions crater across the network.

For the average user, the refresh button is doing nothing — and until Meta rolls back the recent update or fixes the server-side error, the silence on the feed will continue.
