A new case report published in Cureus highlights a rare complication following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Researchers reported a young adult who developed chronic hyponatremia, a condition in which sodium levels in the blood remain abnormally low, due to persistent syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH).

SIADH causes the body to retain too much water, which dilutes sodium in the bloodstream. While SIADH is well recognized after moderate or severe brain injuries, its persistent occurrence after mild TBI is uncommon, making this case clinically important.

The report emphasizes that patients with even relatively mild head injuries may require continued monitoring of sodium levels, particularly when symptoms or laboratory abnormalities persist. Proper identification of the underlying cause is important because prolonged or severe hyponatremia can lead to neurological complications.
