Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik has publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding a recent fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), demanding a transparent investigation into how the blaze started.

The incident, which broke out in a critical section of the capital’s largest public hospital, has sparked immediate concern among both government officials and the general public. While hospital staff managed to evacuate patients before the fire spread, the loss of records and damage to medical equipment have left the facility’s operations in a state of flux.

Malik did not mince words when addressing the matter. He highlighted the “suspicious timing” of the fire, noting that it occurred just as authorities were preparing to audit specific administrative records at the hospital.

“It’s not just about a fire; it’s about what was burning along with the infrastructure,” Malik told reporters during a brief exchange. He stopped short of naming specific suspects but made it clear that the administration cannot simply categorize this as an electrical short circuit without a forensic audit.

For the patients at PIMS, the fire is a major disruption. The facility serves thousands of low-income citizens daily, many of whom rely on its specialized departments for life-saving treatment. With the pharmacy and records office partially compromised, the hospital’s ability to track patient history and medication stocks is now severely hampered.

Hospital administration officials have maintained that the fire was an accident, citing aging electrical wiring in the older wings of the building. However, the petroleum minister’s intervention suggests a push for a deeper, perhaps criminal, inquiry.

The federal government is expected to form a specialized committee in the coming days to review the site. Until that report is filed, the question remains: was this a tragic failure of infrastructure, or a calculated move to destroy evidence?

The investigation’s findings will determine whether the PIMS leadership faces a shakeup or if the incident will be relegated to a list of “unfortunate accidents” that plague Islamabad’s aging public facilities.
