The All Pakistan Oil Tankers Association (APOTA) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the federal government, threatening a countrywide fuel supply strike if their demands regarding increased taxation are not met.

The standoff centers on the implementation of a new withholding tax regime, which transporters claim will cripple their operational viability. If the government fails to negotiate before the deadline expires, the association plans to halt the movement of petroleum products across all provinces.

For the average motorist, the threat is immediate. A nationwide strike would paralyze supply chains, leading to empty pumps within 24 to 48 hours in major urban centers. Past strikes by the association have frequently led to panic buying, price gouging, and severe logistical bottlenecks that took days to clear.

“We aren’t asking for concessions; we’re asking for a system that doesn’t put us out of business,” an APOTA spokesperson said during a press conference. The association maintains that the current tax burden is unsustainable, particularly given the rising costs of vehicle maintenance and fuel overheads.

The Ministry of Energy faces a precarious situation. With the national economy already struggling under high inflation, any disruption to the fuel supply chain risks triggering a fresh wave of price hikes for essential goods. Food and medicine transport relies heavily on the same logistics network that APOTA controls.

Government officials have yet to issue a formal response or invite the association for a high-level meeting. Behind the scenes, however, sources within the Petroleum Division confirm that contingency plans are being discussed to prevent a total supply chain collapse.

As the 72-hour window begins to close, the government must decide whether to concede on the tax issue or risk a supply crisis that could ripple through every sector of the national economy. For now, the pumps remain open, but the threat of a looming shortage is already forcing consumers to reconsider their travel plans for the coming week.
