Oman’s labor regulations are clear: if your employer asks you to work beyond standard hours, you are entitled to extra compensation. Yet, many workers remain unaware of how these calculations function or the specific legal protections afforded to them under the Sultanate’s labor code.

The law mandates a standard 45-hour work week, capped at nine hours per day. Any time logged beyond these limits qualifies as overtime, provided the work is authorized. Employers cannot simply demand extra labor without triggering specific pay requirements.

For standard overtime, the law dictates a premium of 25% above the basic hourly wage. If work occurs during the night—defined by the ministry as between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.—that rate climbs to 50% extra. Should an employee be required to work on a weekly day off or an official public holiday, the compensation jumps to 100% of the basic wage, plus a compensatory day of rest.

Crucially, these protections exclude employees in senior managerial or supervisory roles. The law assumes these positions carry inherent flexibility, meaning those workers aren’t eligible for overtime pay regardless of hours logged. For everyone else, the rules are rigid.

Documentation is the worker’s greatest asset. Verbal agreements rarely hold up during disputes at the Ministry of Labour. If you are asked to stay late, confirm the request in writing. Keep a personal log of your start and end times, as this data becomes vital if an employer tries to withhold what is rightfully owed.

The Ministry of Labour has increasingly digitized its complaint process. If an employer refuses to pay for overtime, workers can file a formal grievance through the ministry’s portal. The legal framework is designed to protect the worker, but the burden of proof rests on your ability to track your hours accurately.

Do not wait until your contract ends to address missing pay. Backdated claims are notoriously difficult to process. If your paycheck doesn’t reflect the extra hours documented, raise the issue with your HR department immediately. If that fails, the law provides the path; you just need the records to walk it.
