Patients across Pakistan will soon gain direct access to international medical expertise under a new government-backed program aimed at curbing the need for expensive medical tourism. The Ministry of National Health Services confirmed the initiative this week, focusing on bringing foreign specialists to local hospitals for complex surgeries and diagnostic consultations.

The program targets patients suffering from rare diseases and advanced-stage conditions that currently overwhelm the local healthcare infrastructure. Instead of patients spending millions on travel, accommodation, and treatment abroad, the government is footing the bill to bring the experts to them.

“We aren’t just flying in doctors for a weekend,” a senior health official told reporters on Wednesday. “We are establishing a structured rotation where international specialists will work alongside our local surgeons. It’s about knowledge transfer as much as it is about patient care.”

The initiative launches with a pilot phase in Islamabad and Lahore, focusing initially on pediatric cardiology and neurosurgery. Health ministry data shows these two departments see the highest volume of patients seeking treatment abroad, often at the cost of life savings or heavy debt.

But the plan faces immediate logistical hurdles. Critics point to the state of existing hospital equipment, questioning whether local facilities can support the advanced procedures these foreign specialists perform. The ministry maintains that the program includes a budget for upgrading operating theaters and diagnostic tools to meet international standards.

For the average patient, the shift is significant. Under the current system, a trip to the UAE or Turkey for specialized surgery can cost upwards of $20,000. Under this new framework, the government aims to subsidize the majority of these costs, though the exact eligibility criteria for patients remain under review.

“The goal is to stop the brain drain and the capital drain simultaneously,” the official added. “If we can provide the same standard of care here, the incentive to leave disappears.”

The ministry expects the first cohort of international specialists to arrive by mid-next month, with the full rollout of the program slated for the first quarter of the coming year. Whether the infrastructure can handle the influx of patients remains the critical test for the government’s ambitious health agenda.
