Pakistan has offered Central Asian countries access to international markets through its strategic geographical location, seaports and expanding regional transport networks. The initiative aims to strengthen economic cooperation, promote regional trade, and give landlocked Central Asian states easier access to global shipping routes.
Speaking at the Second TIANSHAN Forum for Central Asia Economic and Quality Investment in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh highlighted Pakistan’s potential as an important trade and transit corridor connecting Central Asia with international markets.
The minister emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s three major seaports, Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port, describing them as strategic gateways for regional trade and transportation. These ports could provide Central Asian countries with alternative routes to international markets and help facilitate the movement of goods.
He also highlighted Karachi’s importance as a major industrial, commercial and financial centre, offering opportunities for trade, business partnerships and foreign investment. Gwadar Port, meanwhile, has the potential to further strengthen regional connectivity and provide access to markets across different regions.
The minister said Pakistan’s strategic location, industrial infrastructure and young workforce offered significant opportunities for economic cooperation with Central Asian countries. He also stressed the government’s commitment to improving regional connectivity, addressing energy challenges and creating a business-friendly environment to attract local and international investors.
Investment opportunities are available in several important sectors, including energy, infrastructure, transportation, logistics, manufacturing and trade. Improved transport links and reliable energy supplies were identified as important factors for increasing regional economic activity.
He also acknowledged the role of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) programme in promoting trade, improving transportation networks and strengthening economic relations among participating countries.
