Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahmood has backed the selection of veteran spinner Asif Afridi in the national squad, emphasizing that “age is just a number” when it comes to performance and fitness.
Speaking to media, Mahmood stated that the selectors focused on current form and experience, rather than age, in finalizing the squad. He praised Afridi’s recent domestic performances and said that his inclusion adds valuable depth to Pakistan’s spin options.
“Asif has proven himself with consistent performances. If a player is fit and performing, age should never be a barrier,” Mahmood said.
The coach also highlighted the importance of experience in high-pressure matches, noting that senior players bring composure and guidance to younger teammates.
Afridi’s selection has sparked debate among fans, but Mahmood’s comments underline the team management’s confidence in balancing youth with experience.
