Pakistan’s fuel supply chain faces a total standstill as the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) confirmed an indefinite, nationwide strike beginning July 5. Thousands of pumps across the country will cease operations, citing the government’s refusal to address long-standing demands regarding profit margins.

The decision follows weeks of stalled negotiations between the association and the Ministry of Petroleum. Dealers argue that the current margin on petrol and diesel has become unsustainable amid record-high inflation and soaring operational costs. They are demanding an immediate hike in the profit margin to 7% — a target they insist is the only way to keep their businesses solvent.

“We aren’t doing this for sport,” said a regional president of the PPDA. “The cost of electricity, labor, and transportation has doubled in the last year alone. Our current margins don’t even cover our overheads.”

The government has historically resisted these demands, fearing that any increase in dealer margins will force a direct hike in retail fuel prices for consumers. With the country already struggling under a severe cost-of-living crisis, officials are wary of adding further pressure to the national inflation index.

However, the strike threatens to paralyze logistics and public transport networks. Major cities are expected to see long queues at fuel stations in the 48 hours leading up to the shutdown, as motorists scramble to stockpile supplies.

Past strikes by the PPDA have often ended after eleventh-hour compromises involving temporary margin adjustments or promises of future policy reviews. But the tone from both sides this week remains unusually rigid. While the Petroleum Division has signaled it is open to further dialogue, the association has made it clear that they won’t resume supply until a formal notification regarding their margins is issued.

For now, the country is bracing for a supply crunch. If the deadlock holds through Friday, the impact will reach far beyond the pumps, hitting supply chains and food prices within days.
