ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the government to seek nominations from opposition parties for a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms, as efforts continue to build political consensus on improving Pakistan’s electoral system.

According to sources, the government plans to include five opposition lawmakers in a proposed 20-member parliamentary committee. The committee’s chairmanship is expected to be assigned to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The National Assembly speaker will formally approach opposition parties and request the names of their representatives to ensure their participation in discussions on electoral reforms.

The initiative aims to bring government and opposition lawmakers together to develop recommendations for strengthening electoral transparency, fairness and public confidence in the democratic process.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged opposition parties, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to participate actively in the parliamentary committee.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Bilawal emphasized the importance of political dialogue and called on Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai to encourage opposition lawmakers to join the reform process.

A PPP delegation, including Raja Pervez Ashraf and Syed Naveed Qamar, also met opposition representatives to discuss participation in the proposed committee.

The parliamentary committee is expected to examine potential changes to election laws, explore the use of modern electoral technology and prepare recommendations aimed at ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.

The government’s latest initiative comes amid ongoing political differences over election-related issues. Opposition participation will be an important factor in determining whether the committee can develop broadly supported reform proposals.
